Advantages and disadvantages of foreign language as a requirement for graduation for high school students

The purpose of this essay is to discuss the advantages and the disadvantages of foreign language being a requirement for graduation in the high school level students, providing an explanation of the given pros and cons in particular on a personal point of view. According to Nuttall and Alderson (2012), one of the benefits is that learning a second language is a valuable asset to the learner in many ways including the work scenario, college studies and other scenarios that may require them to have the knowledge of multiple languages. However, learning these foreign languages, their construct, pronunciation, is a long and laborious process, which may not be easy for most students to learn because of the differences that exist in sentence construction and the grammatical rules governing these languages.

To begin with, learning a second language is a valuable asset to the learner in many ways including the work scenario, college studies and other scenarios that may require them to have the knowledge of multiple languages, which provides them with a lot of benefits and opportunities in many ways (Nuttall & Alderson, 2012). For example, if one is to be employed as CEO of a company based in Germany, then it is important that this individual has knowledge of the German language, which would come in handy in dealing with the employees in the state, delegating duties and managing these people. Moreover, the learning of this new language would help in ensuring that the operations of the business one are involved in is successful and operates correctly. It is a fact that even the interaction with students in college who are bilingual becomes easier especially during discussions (Nuttall & Alderson, 2012).

Although, learning these foreign languages, their construct, pronunciation, is a long and laborious process, which may not be easy for most students to learn because of the differences that exist in sentence construction and the grammatical rules governing these languages. For instance, learning Spanish from a background of English is very hard especially because the two languages are different in many perspectives, thereby making the learning a hard and challenging process. I have experienced such a situation while learning a new language, whereby I was confused in many aspects including the construct of the sentences, the grammatical rules of these languages, and the general aspects of learning this new language. I had many challenges while learning the new language primarily because my background was in English language and hence learning the new language was hard as I had a base of a different style.

Conclusively, the purpose of this discussion was to describe the advantages and the disadvantages of foreign language being a requirement for graduation in the high school level students, providing an explanation of the given benefits and disadvantages in particular on a personal point of view. The pro of the situation is that learning a second language is a valuable asset to the learner in many ways including the work scenario, college studies and other scenarios that may require them to have the knowledge of multiple languages. Nonetheless, learning these foreign languages, their construct, pronunciation, is a long and laborious process, which may not be easy for most students to learn because of the differences that exist in sentence construction and the grammatical rules governing these languages.
