Introduction

Alaska airlines is an American based airline service whose headquarters is located in the Seattle,Washington. (Serling, 2008). It was founded in 1932 and was then referred to as McGee airways. It offers flights exclusively from Anchorage Alaska to dozens of other destinations. To date, Alaska has offered flights to more than 50 destinations all over America such as Canada, Costa Rica, Hawaii and Mexico (Serling, 2008). It is known for its prowess in providing the highest rate of customer satisfaction. J.D. Power and Associates have ranked it nine times as the airline having the highest customer satisfaction rate for many years in a row nine, to be exact (Serling, 2008). This was however in comparison with older airlines such as Horizon air and Virgin America (Serling, 2008).

Alaska airlines, being one of the largest airline companies in the U.S.A is characterized by a large extensive profile (Serling, 2008). According to the Alaska company profile, an extremely large number of employees characterizes the airline. This is, however, common with airline companies (Serling, 2008). They are characterized with large diverse and complex departments hence the need for a large fraternity of workers to coordinate everything (Serling, 2008).

As of November 2014, a net of twelve thousand nine hundred and ninety-eight employees characterized the airline. The numbers cover everyone from the flight attendants to the engineers charged with maintaining the planes. Out of this number, the company profile indicates that one thousand five hundred fifty are the pilots. The figure covers the main working pilot as well as the co-pilots. The number also features an estimated three thousand four hundred flight attendants that comprise the airhostesses and members of the cabin crew. The remaining number, roughly eight thousand and one hundred are all other staff that do not associate with employees directly. The number include accountants, watchtower attendants, and many others. Destinations

As stated above, the Alaska Airlines began with a single departure point that Anchored Alaska to other destinations. It’s headquartered being Seattle Washington offers flights to over one hundred and four destinations. According to the company profile, its destinations are mainly centered on the United States of America and its neighboring states. It has flight destinations in San Francisco, San Diego, and San Jose California. Raleigh in North Carolina, Puerto Vallarta in Mexico, Portland in Oregon, United States, Phoenix in Arizona, Philadelphia which is in Pennsylvania, Petersburg Alaska Palm springs that are in California, Orlando in Florida, Oklahoma City in Oklahoma, Oakland California and Omaha in Nebraska and many others within America.

It had former destinations in the following areas, Acapulco, Mexico, Dutch Harbor, LaPaz, Mexico that was turned over to Horizon Air, Miami Florida that is now served via Fort Lauderdale in Florida, Reno NV, and Redmond OR, which were turned over to Horizon air. This information is provided according to the company profile. The airline also featured other destinations that were outside America and were in the country of Russia. They include Khabarovsk, Yuzhno -Sakhalinks, Vladivostok, Magadan, and Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.

Fleet

The Alaska Fleet follows a peculiar choice of airplanes (James, 2008). It contains an exclusive all Boeing 737 fleet with the exception of few such as the Embraer 175 and the Bombardier Q400, operated by different airlines (James, 2008). As of January 2017, the following planes characterized Alaska airline fleet. It had Boeing 737-400 which had a total capacity of 114 passengers, the Boeing 737-400c which had a capacity of 7w passengers, the Boeing 737-700 which had a total capacity of 124 passengers, the Boeing 737-800 which could hold up to 159 passengers, the 737-900 which could support 181-178 passengers, the Boeing 737 Max 8 and the 737 MAX 9. The fleet also featured some Cargo planes that include Boeing 737-400 F and the Boeing 737-700F. It is also worthwhile to note that the Alaska Airlines was the first and only airline in the United States that featured exclusive Cargo planes.

Cargo

The Alaskan airline is characterized with an extensive amount of cargo. It has even featured two Boeing 737’s dedicated to carrying cargo. The Alaskan airline cargo has regional operations that reside in some parts of the United States and has the most extensive airline cargo operations on the west coast of U.S.A (James, 2008). This has been reported to be larger than any other passenger airline (James, 2008). The goods that are transported from Alaska include, Seafood while the US postal service mail is transported primarily from Seattle. The airline also delivers goods and packages to the remote, not-easily -accesible areas of Alaska.

Alaskan airlines aim to be one of the most popular and preferred airline by employees seeking work, shareholders and more importantly, their customers (James, 2008). This is as illustrated by the company profile. They believe that their success is dependent on their ability to provide safe air transportation and provide exceptional customer service with low service fees that may be affordable to all groups of individuals (Datamonitor, 2016). This, in turn, ensures that it is always one-step ahead of the competition. The important management aspects discussed will talk about the company’s role in achieving customer satisfaction and environmental friendliness (James, 2008).

The management of Alaska airlines is oriented toward achieving the above-said objectives (James, 2008). It takes into account customer feedback seriously and works to administer the best mode of service to their esteemed customers (James, 2008). Reports have shown that the Alaskan airline has collaborated with Boeing plane manufactures and the Port of Seattle to supply sustainable Biofuel for planes and other aircrafts. This is an important move by the management itself. The airline company knows Biofuel for its role in environmental friendliness making it an environmentally non-harmful move.

The management of the Alaskan airline also takes environmental conservation keenly. Recent insights show that they have a coffee compositing project that aims to ensure all coffee grounds are recycled and used constructively (James, 2008). The environmental bit does not stop there. The Alaskan airline was ranked the top most fuel-efficient U.S airline in the United States region as per 2014. The ranking consisted of thirteen U.S airlines. This had been the fifth time the Airline was ranked top. It outperformed the least efficient by a surprising 25% (Datamonitor, 2016). This shows that the management efforts of the airline are oriented towards efficient fuel consumption and general environment friendliness.

Reports have shown that the company is employing an approach dubbed the Greener Skies approach (Serling, 2008). Resources claim that the initiative involves the company saving on a substantial amount of fuel (87 Gallons) by initiatives such as the shortening of each flight time by about an equivalent of nine minutes (more or less) and also reduce carbon dioxide plus carbon monoxide emissions by about one metric ton each time planes land and take off from the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Achievement of this trope involves using new operations dubbed “Federal Aviation Administration procedures, or in short (FAA) procedures.” The degree of Carbon dioxide gas that will be reduced because of the initiative is equivalent to that which is produced when a car travels one thousand eight hundred miles (Datamonitor, 2016).  Reports show that the benefit, which was initially expected by implementation of this project, has shown 28 percent greater results.

Other initiatives such as reducing flight time reduce carbon dioxide emissions have shown clearly that the Airline is concerned with environmental degradation (Datamonitor, 2016). The aspect plus many other reasons is the reason why the Alaskan Airline will continue being the top choice for many customer’s stakeholders and employees seeking work. Their orientation toward general customer satisfaction and environmental degradation is one area that the management has generally thrived in.
