American Cancer Society
Imagine that a family friend or colleague has just been diagnosed with cancer. Explain how the American Cancer Society might provide education and support. What ACS services would you recommend and why?
The American Cancer Society avail education support to cancer patients through the agency’s wide range of programs. The National Cancer Information Center avails information and education to people living with cancer throughout the year via the organization’s trained cancer information specialists. The information is provided through live chat and phone. I would recommend the ‘online communities’ and the ‘Look Good Feel Better for Teens’ services. The online communities enable victims to learn more and connect with other patients (American Cancer Society, 2016). This gives them support and comfort as they share with other individuals’ diagnosed with cancer. The Look Good Feel Better for Teens is a free program by the American Cancer Society for teens (American Cancer Society, 2016). If the colleague or family friend is a teen, the program aids the individual to cope with cancer treatment. The service supports the patients in addressing the side effects that might change how the individuals look as it may affect them emotionally and psychologically.
According to statistics published by the American Cancer Society, there will be an estimated 1.5 million new cancer cases diagnosed each year over the next decade. What factors contribute to the yearly incidence and mortality rates of various cancers in Americans? What changes in policy and practice are most likely to affect these figures over time?
The yearly incidence and mortality rates of cancer have been affected by the eating habits, physical inactivity and tobacco (WHO, 2016). The factors have made many people be diagnosed with cancer. Failure to refrain from them worsens the condition. Policies should be changed to reduce the consumption of tobacco and regulate their chemical elements which are carcinogenic. Policies on food production should also be changed to monitor how snacks are processed to ensure that the preservatives and additives used are not carcinogenic. People should refrain from consuming processed foods. Additionally, citizens should undertake physical exercises for better blood circulation and body functioning.
Select a research program from among those funded by the American Cancer Society. Describe the program and discuss what impact the research will have on the prevention or treatment of cancer
The ‘Reach to Recovery’ program assist people with breast cancer (ACS, 2016). The research program has been active for over 45 years. It aids victims in coping with breast cancer after diagnosis. The individuals taking part in the program are trained to help people with cancer throughout their experience and treatment. The program has impacted positively on the treatment of breast cancer. It helps victims in choosing the best medical treatment (ACS, 2016). The program uses survivors of breast cancer to support and offer understanding as well as provide them with up-to-date information. The initiative helps the individuals who undergoing diagnosis and treatment to follow the best options that will enable them to recover fully.
