Nursing Advocacy

Accidental falls happen every now and then and reading this post has triggered my curiosity and interest on the issue. I have been close to a victim of a fall and known that the falls can have a great impact on the victim and also the ones who are supposedly taking care of them. There is usually a strain to meet the demands of the patient on the part of the caregiver and on the other hand, the patient may feel like a burden (Kharrazi, 2015). It’s clear to see that falls as much as they may be accidental, have great influence on them. The elderly are the most affected when it comes to falls since most are fragile at their age and falling is something that can change their whole life (Faes, 2010).

It draws attention to some issues like bruising, fractures or increased problems of mobility that occur after falls happen. The post also persuades the readers on the methods that can be used to prevent future falls for example minimization of fears and more exercise routines. Increasing close monitoring of the patients in health care facilities can reduce the occurrence of falls (Kessler, 2012).

I am compassionate towards people who suffer after accidentally falling. Attention should be given to these patients whether in hospitals or homes and methods of prevention of falls should be adopted (Kessler, 2012). Health facilities should lead in educating the society on the dangers of falls and how to prevent them. If I happen to see a victim of a fall, next time I might just be more understanding and willing to help them gain their confidence in a way that their fear of future falls may be minimized.

Burger King Company Scenario Analysis

Burger King Company Scenario Analysis

The blue ocean strategy for a business denotes creation of demand making rivalry among competitors and competition itself insignificant, unlike the red ocean strategy where the competition is stiff for supremacy (Kim, 2014, p.56). Thus, the Burger King business using the blue ocean strategy has to implement critical notions in its operation. These include innovating value (achieved by differentiating its products and lowering its cost of production). The business also observes four critical elements that help it avoid trade-off involving differentiating its products and significant reduction of its operational costs. The four elements include:

Raising critical factors: this shows the objects that need improving within Burger King business about their burgers and other delicacies, their prices and the standards of their services.

Exclude costly operations: these shows the branches of Burger King Company that need to be excluded to reduce operational costs and initiate demand in the market.

Reduction: these shows the areas of Burger King Company that are not important but are significant for the organization. For instance, the expense of producing a certain element needed in making burgers or servicing can be minimized instead of complete elimination.

Creation of new products: these shows the areas the company that need to implement and practice innovation. The Burger King achieves this by innovating on its burgers and other delicacies or by differentiating their services from other companies. This enables them to have their position in the industry.

Scenario analysis for Burger King Company

Scenario analysis depicts an analytical process that prioritizes on likely future occurrences by looking at probable outcomes (Jenkins, 2015, p.34). It’s a form of future projection which tries to bring out a broader perspective of a situation. For the Burger King, the outcomes may relate to cost reduction, product and service differentiation and widening of their operational base in the industry. The company needs to prioritize the following processes to enhance efficiency in its operation and positive future outcome using the below described steps.

Denoting the issue: the company must begin by deciding on their objective. They need to prioritize the time factor as this will be based on the company’s strategic plan. Therefore, they need to look at various future events likely to occur in the future in their operations.

Collecting data: the Burger King needs to prioritize the problems of external environment that are likely to impact the company, that is, economic, political, technological and socio-cultural issues. For instance, the Burger King needs to look at the economic position. Will their products sell at both economic boom and recession? They also need to consider the sustainability of their products in the market. Will they be able to maintain their position in the industry? Furthermore, their personnel should be also taken into account. Can they train and employ professional individuals for their consultations?

Differentiating likely occurrences from uncertainties: the Burger King Company may have confidence and complete belief in their denotation and it may have certainty that various activities will be successful. Uncertainties refer to activities likely to have no consequences or issues stringent to dynamism. The uncertainties should be arranged from the most to the least significant.

Scenario Initiation

The Burger King should begin by looking at the topmost uncertainty. They should extract an averagely positive and negative outcome to initiate the planning for both of them. They need to avoid analyzing many scenarios at this point. For instance, they may decide to create a basis for the below scenarios. If everything goes well, the economic situation may be steady over a certain period will little inconsistencies, so the company will move into market leadership. In case of a slowdown in the economy, the product price may force the economy into recession at the end of the period.

Implementing the Scenarios in Strategic Planning

The company should use the scenarios in initiating strategic plans.  The Burger King knows the risks in a certain period of operation having analyzed the scenarios. The company needs to look at the operations of other companies entering the market and if the new entrants pose a threat to their operation.

Burger Kings Strategic Risk Management

Strategic risk management is one of the most significant factors to be considered in operation. The company needs to prioritize it, as it is a continuous process of examining the most expected challenges for the company. The company’s stakeholders need to revise their action plans regularly with the same goal (Sadgrove 2016, p.215). The company’s board should thus follow the following risk management process to ensure effectiveness in operation:

Understanding Risk Management Strategies of the Burger King Company

The company’s board needs to understand the organization’s key action plans and objectives.  The assessment needs to place priority on the strategies as it enables generation of probable perils. It also generates a basis for bringing together risk management and organizational strategy. This step aims to aid Burger King Management generating a framework for their operation.

Gathering Information on Strategic Risks

The Burger King needs to pick data and views involving the company’s strategic risks. This can be achieved by interviewing the senior executives, managers and directors, data analysis, that is, financial information and presentations from the investors. The company needs to involve both internal and external auditors in the process to weigh their view on the possible risks.

Profile and Validate the Strategic Risks

The company should analyze the data gathered in the previous steps and generate an efficient risk profile. The details should be based on the company’s culture and outline the major perils, their rating and magnitude. Sufficient agreement between the management needs to be carried out to eliminate a conflict of interests.

Initiating a Strategic Risk Management Strategy

The Burger King company needs to generate an operational strategy to enabling them to evaluate perils and manage actions related to them. This process will thus aid the company manage and assess the major predicted risk.

Communication of the Strategic Risk Management Strategy

The company’s management needs to communicate all the top risks and the generated action plans across all levels to create a common understanding of the possible perils and the best modes of management. Personnel will thus get a better overview of the risks and their magnitude. It will enlighten the roles they need to play in risk management. In turn, this will enhance performance and level of integrity in the company.

Implementing the Action Plans

The Burger King needs to put into action the strategies generated to curb the probable risks. They require regular review as risks continuously change. This will involve constant customization of the organizational framework, management, and control to ensure the success of the whole process.

In case the company carries out the situation analysis, it will achieve desired future outcomes. For proper operation, a correct strategy in risk management needs to be implemented. This can be accomplished through coordination of all the levels of management. In the long run, this will reduce the risks associated with production, cost, and operation in the industry. It will help the company survive in the unpredictable economy and manage its operation by safeguarding its resources.

Company Description and SWOT analysis

Company Description and SWOT analysis

Company name and its significance

The jolly smoothie is a NAB company which participates in offering frozen drinks which are smoothie and milkshakes. Both are products of fresh ingredients acquired from local farmers. The company also offers to take away smoothies as well as frozen yoghurt. The name is meant to exhibit the value attached to the brand. The jolly smoothie aim is promoting a healthy lifestyle among people who consume it and to make sure that those who take the product are in a position to soberly conduct daily activities as opposed to those using alcoholic beverages. The term jolly is a representation of the feeling of joy experienced by people who consume the product. The non-alcoholic drink is relative to happy moments. When the society experiences the health benefits of the drink, they live a healthy and joyous life.

Mission statement of the company

The jolly smoothie company which encourages and supports a lifestyle which is healthy with delicious farm fresh products. The mission of the company is to have a diets improvement by making flavoursome drinks which are composed of healthy constituents including vegetable fruits which are fresh, juices and various milk. In being in a position where nutritious frozen beverages are created, one’s diet is balanced and very nourishing. Getting ingredients from the local farmers is a means of sowing back to the community as well as support local farming. The company strives to become a business that is widely known in the region, putting into consideration the interest of consumers whose best choice is based on healthy dessert beverages.  The goal of the company is to ensure that we grow and gain profitability, annually, while still ensuring that customers are jolly. The company’s current operations are in the farmer’s markets. The aim, however, is to ensure that the company possesses franchises where people will buy the company’s business model. Considering that there is no mass production since every constituent is made in the store, most people will be willing to buy into the concept more.

Trends and why I chose the beverage

The millennial market is a trend in the smoothies’ beverage market. The millennials are very conscious about their health more than the generations that came before. This means that the production and packaging of the smoothies should be looked into. The best hygienic practices should be observed. Since most of the consumers are very concerned about the GMO labelling, transparency on the ingredients and health benefits of a product should be part of the packaging.

The reasons as to why I chose the beverage is that they are easy to understand. The first reason is that the smoothie is healthy. In the current world, people are increasingly becoming aware of their health. Smoothies are a great way to helping detoxify by adding a detoxifying component to a smoothie. There are also several programs that encourage weight loss by substituting a meal for a drink. Smoothies are a great means of ensuring that the body acquires the appropriate vitamins while still dieting. The smoothies also aid in digestion. The second reason why I choose smoothie is that they are portable. What is trending is that most of the consumers of a product wish to have a product which they can carry from one place to another without any difficulty. The product can also be made from anywhere at any time as long as one has the right tools. The third reason is that smoothies are fast and easy to make. Provided one has ingredients, coming up with the product is easy. It saves time, and people who wish to consume the product do not have to wait for long.

Strategy to apply

The best strategic position for my company is effective communication. I believe that by having a clear communication channel with my customers and consumers of the product, continuous improvement will be inevitable. I will ensure that I speak the language of my customers. This means that I adhere to their interests and preferences. I will listen to complaints and act immediately. I believe that having a good relationship with customers is of importance in achieving loyalty for my brand.

Distribution and marketing

I will use my sales team to market the product in supermarkets, wholesale and retail shops as well as in hotels. I intend to begin by marketing through the use of pamphlets and door to door marketing. I will also create a website which I will market the product through. More to this, I will make use of social media. This is because social media will reach as many people as possible. Once people make their orders, I will have my sales team deliver it to the destination of their wish.

Risks that the business faces

To set up the business, I need to have permits. Acquiring the permits is expensive. However, I have to take the risk even if I am not sure if the company will yield returns within the expected time the second risk is that I am putting up a business that already exists in the market. I am not sure if I will get customers and therefore had to take the risk. According to recent studies by scientists, smoothies may be a source of risk to the human health due to the amount of sugar the health drinks hold. Setting up the business with such findings is a risk.

SWOT analysis

Several opportunities exist for the company. The unique flavour of the product makes it outdo other companies. With the discovery of the need to lead healthy lives, most people are entering the market of smoothie products. More to these the existing market is loyal to the product which gives the motivation to produce the product.

There exist companies which produce similar products, bringing about competition.  The competitors are big companies who engage in extreme promotion activities which jolly smoothie might not be in a position to conduct. This also goes hand in hand with inadequate funds to accomplish the same.  According to Phillips (2016), Lack of enough funds also makes it hard to create a difference between the high and low-class customers since the products are within a similar range of quality and price.

The company has very creative and innovative employees who always help come up with effective marketing strategies. They also help come up with the unique packaging styles that attract customers. More to these the employees are well trained on how to market and produce the product.

The means of producing the product is unique; the recipe is of high quality. This enhances the taste and flavour of the product. The company has so far been able to create a good network with the customer which boosts the overall profit made.

The company often faces challenges in finances. The finances are very important in assisting with marketing and promotion.  The company, therefore, engages in very few promotional activities. If the company were to do more promotions the yield would be much more.  Another weakness that the company faces is the fact that its small size makes it challenging to cover large areas, unlike its competitors.

Analytic Memo

Analytic Memo

The analytical discussion question I created is: why is it important for the Dakota and Lakota people to have a movement against the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline?

Since April 2016, the Standing rock Sioux tribal led people in helping stop the construction of the Dakota Access pipeline (DAPL). This is a pipeline meant to facilitate transportation if crude oil from Dakota to Illinois. According to the Dakota and Lakota people, the pipeline is seen as a means of risking the quality of water and destructing the culture of the people. The construction is seen to have already interfered with places which are significant to the culture of the people such as sites where ancestors were buried. Investors of the pipeline claim that their aim is to gain profit by providing an alternative and cheaper means of transportation other than the train. Advocates of the pipeline state that the pipeline is environmental friendly and is an avenue where jobs will be created for people. It is however unclear how all the claims of the advocates will be achieved.

Upon presentation of the case on preliminary injunction of the construction by people from Dakota, the judge opined against the request. His claims were that the Army corps of Engineers and Energy transfer partners did not take their time to investigate the risks associated with the construction during their evaluation. They instead put their reliance on processes of assessments, communication modes and consultants from the outside that are said to not put interest on indigenous people on the forefront. The rapporteur of the United Nations who stands for the indigenous people’s rights insists that the United States should have respect people’s right to free consent.

The writer views the action of ignoring the interests of the people. An injustice is a situation where one or more groups of people aim to accomplish their own political, economic or cultural gains by continually causing harm to other people (Pows, 2017). The write applies the concept of settler colonialism to explain why DAPL was built along land and water which are significant aspects of the Dakota and Lakota people. A history of settler colonialism exists among the people living in that community.

Dakota people have always maintained healthy diplomatic relations with indigenous people living in woodlands and plains of North America. Everything was working out well until the United states dishonored the relationship that existed between the people of Bison and the Dakota and Lakota people. They began engaging in overharvesting bison to get furs which they would ship to far markets.  The United States settlers also began moving to areas where the Dakota ad Lakota people had established their own social, political, cultural and economic relations. The interests of the settlers were based on mining of gold, trading and farming. With time, the US settlers managed to dominate the Dakota and Lakota people. They sent their children to far away schools and ensured that they were divested of their culture, knowledge and norms. They replaced this by equipping them with technical skills that would assist the settlers in their occupations.

After experiencing such an ordeal with the U S settlers, the Dakota and Lakota people feel the right to fight against the DAPL business. It is a settler business adventure which aims to interfere with the way of life of these people. Indigenous suffering is a result of interfering with conditions of the environment. Movements such as the #NoDAPL should be established to ensure that issues in fighting for the rights of the indigenous people are addressed.

Immigration is the movement of people between or among nations. They do not belong to the country they are moving into by birth, therefore, do not possess citizenship (Hollifield, 2014). They cannot be permanent.  People who are migrating to another country are referred to as immigrants. Obtaining employment for this people is not easy since they do not belong to that particular country.  Most migrants face discrimination in their host countries since they are not natives and the lack of identity. Recently there had been a case relating to fishing where one fishery in Oxford shire had put a sign that said no Polish or Eastern bloc fisherman would be allowed into that fishery. It said that legal action would be taken on these people in case they entered the fishery. This brought mixed reaction especially to Polish fishermen who wanted the signpost to be removed since it was discriminatory. The Polish were willing to sue the fishery manager for the rooting of that signpost (Jasmin, 2017). It’s not fair to prohibit people from accessing certain services due to their race and nationality since the trend has become outdated. Polish immigrants are common in the United Kingdom.

Poles in the United Kingdom were involved in activities that were aimed at improving the economic conditions of their families and relatives in Poland. They would send food and money to them. This was usually obtained from war activities and pensions as these were the economic activities they were involved in while in the United Kingdom at that time of Cold War. Poles are employed in London and other cities in all sectors such as construction, banking, education, journalism and agriculture (White, 2017) There is also recognition of the Polish history and culture among British people. Poland has been absorbed into the European Union, and foodstuffs from Poland are becoming more familiar. There has also been an increase in publications in Polish and Polish language has been embraced among the British (Burrell, 2016).

How immigration affects the economy, wages, employment and overall working conditions of UK natives

Labor markets are affected by immigration due to the skills of the immigrant, the skills possessed by existing workers and the nature of the economy of the host country. The increase in labor affects the economy both in a small duration and a wider duration of time. In little duration of time, wages and employment are affected (Ruhs, M. and Vargas-Silva, 2014). This is about the skills being possessed by the immigrants. Immigrants may have skills that are complements and substitutes to those possessed by existing workers. This will raise the level of competition in the labor market. The increased labor force is usually an advantage to employers as they know they can get substitutes whenever in need. This enable them to be able to manipulate the wages they offer to their workers.

This may bring down the wages being received by the workers due to the availability of similar applications (Peri, 2014). Low wages may hence de-motivate the workers since the wage being paid to them may not be able to meet their needs and unemployment levels may rise depending on the consenting levels of the workers (Bratsberg, 2014). Some of the natives may fail to obtain job opportunities due to the flooding of the labor market. When many people have similar skills, there is competition, and some may miss opportunities. However, not many of the natives have been affected.

In contrast , when competencies of the immigrants are a consummation to abilities of their colleagues in a particular industry, there is expected productiveness which may, in turn, raise the wages of the workers both immigrants and existing (Galgóczi, 2016).In the UK, the Polish migrants have brought little effect on the workforce. This is because; most of them do not have distant substitutes in their skills. However, this is not to be taken for granted as some of the UK born workers may lack employment due to the flooding of skills. Others may feel that the reduction in the wages does not favor them, therefore, leaving the employment industry (Brücker, 2014). UK natives, however, are not reluctant and they continue to work without deterring.

Other than the addition of the availability of labor, immigration can raise the level of need for the workforce (Faggio, 2014). With immigration, there is an increase in the number of people in that country hence there will be an increase in the demand for goods and services. Production industries will hence rising the needs of the people. Production industries will produce more food and clothing industries will make more clothes leading to an increase in the levels of investment. With more people in the economy, industries will feel the need to increase their labor force to keep up with the demand. More employment and wages will be experienced. Immigration, therefore, creates more job opportunities as well as increasing competition in the market (Wadsworth, 2016). However, placement of capital in expectation of deriving income and demand for workforce will rely on the features of the economy. When the economy is in a recession, the demand for workforce may be lower than at the boom.

Immigration affects the goods and services being produced in a country. This changes the structure of industries. For example, low skilled workers who have migrated into a country may lead to the production of goods that are low quality. Highly skilled immigrants may influence changes in technology and encourage innovation and invention leading to the production of high-quality products (Ottaviano, 2015). The reason behind this is that, when people come into a country with high levels of skill, employers will want to utilize them maximally in that they will bring positive change in their industries. Most Polish people are working in the low skilled sectors such as manufacturing and hospitality. This indicates that the majority of people in the high skilled jobs are the natives of the United Kingdom. This shows that the migration of Polish people into the country has not had a high impact on the natives since natives can claim their positions in the job markets (Hollifield, 2014).

Immigration in the United Kingdom has a small effect on the wages in the workforce markets (Dustmann, 2014). However, there is a more significant effect on the distribution of wages that is, the highly paid workers, medium and lowly paid workers (Nickell, 2015).The increase of the number of immigrants into the country resulted in the increase of wages. The rise in the in the number of people who have attained the working age affects the payment of wages in that laborers  lowly paid  are unconsidered whereas the wages of the highest paid individuals rise (Dustmann, 2014). This mainly affected the Polish migrants since they are mainly in the low skilled jobs. Low skill jobs are associated with low wages since the skills being utilized are also low.

However, there are no adverse effects on wages due to immigration since competencies of those who are not natives are closer substitutes to those of the initial laborers in the industries in the UK (Akay, 2014). Immigration has no adverse effects on the employment of UK born workers in overall. Therefore, there is stability among the natives about labor, employment, and wages. The natives hence do not feel left out in their own country as most of the highly skilled job opportunities are given to them.

The overall working conditions have been improved with immigration. This has occurred due to the high number of skilled labor available. With more skills in the market, this means that there will be many inventions. Industries, therefore, have to keep up with the pace and meet the demands of technology and labor force. Employees, therefore, have a high working condition that gives them a platform for inventions. People can go on about their duties at ease since they are not afraid to demonstrate their skills. Polish migrants have therefore added positivity in the labor market in the United Kingdom.

Conclusively, the Polish migration into the United Kingdom has not had adverse effects on the natives of that country. This is mainly due to the close substitution of skills that the Polish possess about the UK natives.  However, the natives of the United Kingdom should also be keen to learn any new ideas that may be brought about by the immigrants. Migrants into a country should also not be discriminated against due to their race or ethnic group as in the case of the fishery farm. The natives should aim to add more skills in their career. This will ensure that they are a step ahead of the Polish. The range of substitution will become wider hence the wages administered will also rise. This way, the labor market will not be affected easily nor the wage rates be diminished. Restriction of immigrants into the United Kingdom can be helpful in that, the low skilled workers who are not natives can get more wages since the markets will not be flooded. The level of employment will also go up since there will be less saturation. A balanced economy is hence easily achieved.

Emergency Preparedness and Response

Emergency Preparedness and Response

Florida department of health

          I chose the Florida Department of Health as it places significance in the well being of the households in Florida. It works hard to ensure the provisions of the second amendment are adhered to and those laid down by the Florida senate are followed to uphold the well being of the people (Guo, 2015). The department keeps the people at par with trends and updates in health issues. Florida department of health emergency preparedness and response plans include;

 Preparation of one’s self

They avail implements to aid one and his relatives are ready for any emergency. They provide data on the present perils and significant advice on survival methods during emergency crisis.

Prepare survival kit

In order to safeguard lives during times of disaster, one needs to prepare a survival kit for the relatives by assembling basic commodities and placing them in an easily movable container (Guo, 2015). This will create ease in carrying during emergency times. Some of the basic commodities to include when packing are:

Water: One should ensure to store enough to go for a week or more.

Food: This should also be enough to feed a family for three to seven days.  One should also include foods that do not easily like canned products. Also products such as infant foods and those for the old should be considered. Foods such as energy bars should be packed. Implements such as can openers, heating materials, utensils and pet foods need to be prioritized.

First aid kit: These should contain medications and prescriptions to help treat injuries in occurrence of disasters.

Other items: Other items to include are toiletries, clothing, and torches with batteries, radios with batteries, items for pat care, whistles, compasses, maps, flares and thermal blankets. The significant items should be stored in a container that does not permit permeability of water. Some of these important items include chargers; cash on hand, emergency numbers, medical files, insurance details, title deeds, professional certifications and social security details.

Response preparedness

Florida’s public health systems together with other agencies ensure proper training, proper response, adequate performance of response role and overall readiness to combat any peril.

  Environment state readiness

They help by optimizing available resources via strategic plans and coordination with the help of the local and government levels (Crosby, laura F., 2015).  The local and government levels inhibit likely health perils from industrial effluents and radiations from environmental agents (Haddow, 2017).

Florida Emergency Resources

The resources are adequate in meeting the emergency needs of the people of Florida. The resources are utilized as depicted below;

Authentication of emergency personnel

Authentication involves providing documents meant to identify the emergency workers and analyzing their abilities and skills by prioritizing on proper training, health, proper physic and ability for performance (Crosby, laura F., 2015). It ensures the workforce operates within the assigned region.

Disaster response framework

The Florida public healthcare response unit coordinates the communal, state and government level to ensure proper emergency response which is laid out as protocols (Bayleyegn, 2015). The following are the resources availing emergency response

Florida unit of disaster management: it’s responsible for ensuring coordinated response to all disasters occurring in Florida and manages all activities pertaining to the emergencies.

The regional security task force: the members of this team include the public health institutions, the fire and rescue teams and the police department. By using all this players, the regional security task force serves the public by coordinating with disaster management experts.

Response institutions: during emergency times, the public health response unit requires aid from government agencies and non government firms. They provide funding, food and medical supplies to disaster stricken regions of the state.

The FL Health system

During disaster periods, the systems aid the residents by availing information which is reliable and timely involving the situation. This helps in rescue missions and safeguarding the people.

Group volunteering

In Florida, this is carried out by the medical reserve corps who is a unit of free will servers prioritizing on health improvement and security in their local areas. The medical and public health experts play this role together with other individuals who have public heath welfare at hand (Bayleyegn, 2015). The volunteers undergo through public health programs, trainings and screenings in order to ensure proper performance and response.

National strategic medical supply

During emergency periods, large amounts of necessary medical provisions are availed to various counties and local areas by the federal strategic national stockpile. This program ensures adequate distribution of medical provisions to assist the disaster stricken countries. This will go a long way in aiding reduce deaths within a time period of forty eight hours (Bayleyegn, 2015).

Resources to be added

Massive emergency training

The federal government together with the state and communal levels need to initiate programs meant to educate masses on methods of handling disasters. They should be enlightened on how to act before, during and after to reduce panic and deaths. They should always be aware and equipped to face difficult situations.

Internet in a box

Enabling portability of the internet will enable individuals pass information easily during moments of crisis. For instance, individuals trapped in a collapse building can communicate to the outsiders on the current situation.

Roles as a health practitioner

As a public health practitioner, I can dispense the following roles to the public;

Premarital health care provider and coordinator

I can educate teenagers and other youngsters on conception prevention methods and sexual health in educational institutions and the local areas (Nelson, 2016). I would carry out analysis on service outcomes and outlay the necessary measures to improve on pre marital health.

Forced migration can be defined as the movement of people from their domicile to another. This movement can be enhanced by factors such as natural tragedies including drought, floods, and famine (Gemenne, 2014). Another cause of migration can search for better opportunities especially in the western countries where many believe there are many viable opportunities. Civil wars can also force people to move from their original lands. These wars may be caused by the political situation, race, and religious beliefs. There are many people who have migrated due to political induced situations such as post-election violence. When a government intends to develop an area, it may displace the residents of that area for instance when building roads, mining in that area and building of airports. In essence, these people are mostly compensated with huge amounts of money and as a result, may opt to migrate to their coveted western countries without much thinking.

Outline of the Essay

Migration in the recent days has become a threat to security in the countries where people migrate into. With the increase in a number of immigrants in western countries such as the United States of America, United Kingdom, and other developed countries, there is a tendency to increase the level of crimes. Immigrants may consider turning into criminal activities in cases where they feel unappreciated in the new country. Also, when these people do not find what they were aiming to get in the new country, they may adopt bad behaviors such as prostitution and robbery. This happens when they lack the opportunities such as jobs in that country.

Security can be considered in many aspects. A country’s security can be risked regarding; inadequacy of resources. When there are too many immigrants in a country, the country may lack enough resources to feed all of them which may render a country being unable to provide (bankruptcy) and a shame to other states. This is considered as instability of the country since it is not able to maintain its people. Another threat is that too many people in a country who might be jobless may lead to crimes rising in these countries (Lazaridis, 2016). Western countries are considered more productive, and thus immigrants may turn to robbery and murder crimes to generate money. Since these states are expensive to live in, they find that engaging in criminal activities may be an easy breakthrough. They may also form gangs that threaten the security of these countries.

There are also societal security threats. These are influences that immigrants may have on the residents of that state. Some immigrants may be demoralized, and this may hence influence those residing in the state they have migrated into. This will lead to the adoption of bad cultural activities and immorality increase which is a threat to the society at large (Lazaridis, 2016). The traditions of that community are hence lost in the long run. For example, communities that uphold honesty and respect may be corrupted by immigrants who come from societies that do not regard respect highly. The society may adapt to these trends and end up losing their dignity in the long run. Corruption of behaviors may make a particular state to lag behind since even in professional sectors; there will be an influence of this bad behavior.

This essay will hence focus on all these threats that are brought about by immigrants into the western countries in particular. These will be explained in detail and remedies to these security threats will be established since security is a large aspect.

American Media Ownership Model and Impact on Policies

American Media Ownership Model and Impact on Policies

The same way most governments across the world can control the media content, corporations in the United States exert their influence on the conventional media. A critical study of Media in America reveals that close to all media content originates from the common six sources (Eli 50). The fact that media is owned by few six companies means that Americans live under an illusion of having a choice when it comes to accessing news and entertainment. The reason is that despite having many channels to choose from, they end up consuming the same content. It has emerged that 90% of what people living in the United States of America listen to, read or watch all come from six giant companies that control the media. The six giant companies that own media in the US include NEWS CORP that owns Fox, Wall Street Journal and New York Post (Eli 70). Another giant company is DISNEY that controls ABC, ESPN, PIXAR, MIRAMAX and Marvel Studios. VIACOM is also part of the six giant companies controlling the media in the US.  VIACOM has many properties that include MTV, BET, CMT and Paramount Pictures. Among the giant companies, there is also TIME WARNER that owns a major player in the media industry CNN, HBO, TIME and WARNER BROS (Eli 75). The final company is Comcast because GE no longer owns any media.

Just like a government controlled media can undermine democracy and people’s freedom of expression, media that are controlled by few companies can also undermine the freedom of expression because the media houses are profit driven.  Big companies have the advantage of not airing news, opinions or programs that could weaken their financial interests and therefore disadvantage the ordinary citizens because they do not have free access to information (Eli 110). For example, subscribers of the Medford Mail Tribune usually express their frustration since it was acquired to be part of NEWSCORP property. The newspaper has changed since the buyout, and it seized being an independent paper. Before the buyout the articles from Mail Tribune would cover a story on all angles, performing an in-depth analysis, but in recent times it very rare to find articles with such analysis. The subscriber’s dissatisfaction is evident through their letters to the editor. Another disadvantage of the corporates owned media in America is that because they are profit driven, instead of using their resources to improve the accuracy and coverage of local news, they will focus more on national news. For the big companies, it is convenient to lay of the local reporters and concentrate more on the national news to reach their target audience for profits. For example, it is common to find people are much aware of what is happening nationally but clueless on the events in their local area.

The media that is controlled by private companies may set the agenda for the country and influence the policy decisions made by the government (Eli 111). For example, if a company that does not favor the business interests of the six major companies controlling the media is involved in a scandal, the companies can use their influence to completely push it out of the market by forcing the government to act on public pressure. If the public repetitively listens to the news that a certain company is corrupt for a whole week, people might start calling for action from the government, and in the attempt to please the public the company might get a severe punishment than ordinarily expected. Since America has been involved in several wars on foreign soil, the six private companies may use the coverage on the wars to their advantage. For example, they may build a narrative on why America must act in a certain way when dealing with the war in Syria by broadcasting one side of the story to the public and avoiding certain dimensions of the same story. The public can, in turn, buy the media narrative and support more airstrikes by the American government, therefore, influencing the way the operation is carried out.

marketing metrics

marketing metrics

The purpose of this paper is to break down and analyze marketing metrics, brand breakthrough and show the importance of marketing. The functions impact the performance and viability of the marketing department in the organization. A company should focus on its marketing procedures so that more profits can be realized. A company whose marketing plan is superior is able to achieve more success since it becomes more recognizable both locally and globally.

Theory– Article Deconstruction

The articles to be broken analyzed include marketing metrics, brand breakthrough and showing the importance of marketing. I will be using the MEAL plan to deconstruct the articles which begins by showing the main points, the evidence, analysis and linking.

Marketing metrics

Many marketers find it challenging to measure and determine the impact of marketing in the industry. Many individuals find it difficult to comprehend the meaning to the different types of metrics used in the market. Management needs to have a clear understanding of the metrics in order to use them efficiently and correct the marketers in case of ineffective utilization. The metrics used in marketing include the market share and net promoter score (Bendle, 2016).

Market share

Managers in many organizations alternatively used market share as a unit for performance determination and as an organizational goal. Utilizing market share is quite challenging to back up as many of the managers understand the main aim of an organization is to maximize the profitability of the owners and to cater for the welfare of the workers and clients.  Since the size of the market share does not determine the rate of profits generated, priority should be based on maximizing the wealth of the owners (Bendle, 2016). The managers should concentrate on increasing the company profits rather than optimizing market share.

Net promoter score

Most managers embrace net promoter scores in the marketing industry. The company determines the likelihood of a recommendation to a third party by its customer. They are rated from zero to ten, with those choosing nine or ten being the promoters; ones on six and below are detractors. The score is determined by finding the difference between the amount of promoters and detractors. The score was associated with profitability increment which is not true. For instance, a company might have to reduce the price of a commodity whose demand is relatively inelastic. The reduction in price will be automatically followed by an instant recommendation from its clients to their friends. The revenue generated from the product will thus fall while the score goes up (Bendle, 2016). Therefore, using net promoter score as a performance metric is not advisable. Putting into practice the net promoter score will not enhance company profitability.

Brand breakthrough

Advancement in technology has changed the face of marketing over the years. The marketing industry has been able to evolve from the traditional marketing models. Most of the app companies have been able to penetrate the market and receive recognition from majority of the clients within a period of less than ten years (Gallagher, 2017). Most of these brands are able to resonate with majority of the clients as compared to other which have been in the market for more than ten years. Some of the brands include instagram, Airbnb and uber. All of the brands started as faddish development with a little resilience from the clients but later gained prominence in the face of the consumers.

Instagram began as a short term popular brand where individuals could take spontaneous photographs with friends. The high quality photos associated with the app enticed facebook to procure the brand. The acquisition led to the increment in the number of the brand users. Today, the app has gained prominence with users exceeding five hundred million across the market.

Airbnb also began as faddish app with derangement views from the market. It is a message app where individuals open their residences to host non residents. The app has however transformed travels and vacations. Individuals are able to choose homes to spend on travels. The app avails home photos and enables negotiations on price for better travel experiences (Gallagher, 2017). It has broadened its market and gained popularity with one hundred and forty guests using it for their travels.

The brand initially began as an amusing mode of summoning a black vehicle with a phone application. Today, majority of the people utilize the app for cab services due to its cost efficiency over other travel agencies. The brand has gained prominence in over seventy nations all over the globe and also has diversified its operations to meal delivery (Gallagher, 2017).

Showing the importance of marketing

Many marketing functions experience intense force from other functions to show their importance in the company’s operations. The marketers create product knowledge, loyalty of products and operational metrics. The metrics however do not relate with each other as one could demonstrate the initiatives a success and others as a squander of resources depending on the organization (Hanssens, 2016). The difference is initiated by different factors, that is, effectiveness and efficiency. Efficiency determines capability to avail performance with minimal capital while effectiveness determines the capability to attain an objective.

Majority of the organizations pay little attention and priority on the marketing function. Marketing effectiveness is given more priority but the marketers are considered as juniors in the organization. Decisions on pricing and logistics are carried out in other functions which enhance performance. However, functionality of other departments cannot be availed without budgeting which is initiated by the marketing department (Hanssens, 2016).

Budget allocation decisions

Marketers determine the critical fields to allocate finances optimally in order to maximize return on investments and reduce insignificant costs in other functions. The market officers carry out budget allocations to media platforms for advertising. The organizational owners also make allocation decisions based on the marketer’s decisions. All the decisions made by the marketer are utilized and implemented by the senior management in resource allocation.

Case Study Application: Coca-Cola Company

The Coca-Cola Company has been one of the most favored companies in the world. It has a very competitive marketing strategy. It originally began as a syrup company where it had little prevalence in the market. Over the years, it has grown through integration and coordination of its functionalities. Coca cola is a multinational company with branches all over the globe where it initiates comprehensive marketing strategies that have helped it gain a competitive advantage over other firms in the market. Coca cola prioritizes on its marketing strategies which have greatly improved it sales (Wang, 2015).

In conclusion, marketing is an important strategy to enhance competition and reliability. Reliability is in the sense that, the company’s customer finds it more convenient in a way that the delivery of goods is faster. Customers feel more accommodated by the company and their needs are met efficiently.

Cellphones as Educational Tools

Cellphones as Educational Tools

The number of cellphone users in the world has grown over the years accompanied by a rapid technological growth. By the year 2016, statistics showed that 62.9% of the world population owned a cellphone. The growth in cellphone ownership has been sustained in 2017, and it is expected that by 2019, 67% of the population in the world will own a cellphone. It is important to note that as time passes, technological advancements are making it possible to produce cellphones with very high capabilities and hence they have been referred to as smartphones. The cellphone has changed different aspects of life as people are using it for other purposes than making phone calls (Brown & Irwin 388). For example, in Kenya, there is an established system of sending and receiving money through cellphones with a service known as MPESA. The service also allows the subscribers to make payments for their bills via the same MPESA service. From these developments that are making the cellphone more than a communication tool, it is critical to evaluate ways that the cellphone can be used as an education tool. The cellphone fits as an education tool mainly because modern technology makes it possible for the cellphone to be connected to the Internet. On the Internet, there are limitless learning tools that can be utilized for education. From the concept of the cellphone accessing the Internet as well as other capabilities it has, it is, therefore, possible to explore the ways that the cellphone can be an education tool. The discussion below, thus, shows ways in which the cellphone can be an education tool.

Today’s cellphones can access the Internet and download applications. E-books are compatible with most cellphones, and therefore the users can download them and read. With the cellphones having an enlarged storage, the users can be able to download the books and store them for use during their convenient time. It is critical to note that as opposed to the earlier versions of e-books, modern e-books come with enhanced features like videos and tutorials (Ally & Mohamed 11). The videos make learning interesting especially for young children because they are entertaining. Students also have the option of doing exams and getting automatic marks from the applications. The students can therefore quickly learn and correct their mistakes without necessarily having to wait for their tutors.

The applications also come with the capability to help the students pronounce new and foreign words correctly. Using the cellphone, the student just needs to highlight the word he or she wants to learn the pronunciation and the audio will be projected through the cellphone speaker. The cellphones can also be used when writing notes. The audio versions of the e-books allow the users to listen as they write their notes and people can use such version to make their learning effective. Instructors can also email e-book pages with questions to their students where they can answer them and send back for marking. The interactive features of e-books that are accessible through cellphones can be used by students for self-education to avoid time wastage that usually occurs when students must wait for the teacher to explain.

The mobile applications can also be used to introduce new learning methods. Students often suffer from boredom whenever they spend a lot of time in a classroom using the same methods of learning. The ability of the cellphone to manage applications has however created an opportunity to make learning more interesting through the introduction of new methods to pass the same knowledge. For example, games that are installed in the cellphone can be used for learning. A student may feel bored when reading a book to learn spelling and pronunciation but become more interested when he or she is taught through a spelling game on the cellphone. The games have the features to highlight spelling mistakes and in turn, reduce the points a player is scoring. The application keeps encouraging them not to repeat the same mistake next time for him or her to be declared the winner. The fun games can also help the students to participate in a healthy process of thinking that helps them in understanding things from diverse perspectives (Kukulska-Hulme, Agnes & John 78).

The cellphone can be used to enhance communication

Learning depends on effective communication, and the cellphone can enhance communication at different levels. To begin with, the parent-teacher communication can be enhanced when the parents utilize the platforms provided by cellphone to communicate and discuss how to facilitate the learning of students. The teachers can use messages on their cellphones not only to invite parents to meetings but also give them feedback about the progress of their children (Keegan 60). On the other hand, communication is important between the teachers and students. Students can use the cellphones to call their lecturers and seek clarifications on their assignment or ask academic questions whenever they happen to be studying a certain topic that they do not understand. When marking the scripts submitted by students, teachers can use the cellphone to contact the students and inform them an area of weakness and what they can do to improve and get better grades next time.

Another critical form of communication is the one that takes place amongst the students. The cellphone can play a big role in helping the students to exchange knowledge amongst them and educate each other through discussion tools. WhatsApp is a unique tool that runs on cellphones and one that can be embraced by students that wish to form a group and educate each other through the discussion groups. Students that own cellphones that support WhatsApp are at the advantage of adding their friends and classmates to a WhatsApp group that can be used to discuss educational matters and even plan for academic trips that make learning interesting. The WhatsApp groups are powerful tools for learning because they allow the students to share in different formats. The application allows the students to share text documents, videos as well educational audio clips from their favorite mentors. The WhatsApp groups mimic ordinary discussions where people can argue their points out with supporting evidence, and other people can give their dissenting opinion until finally the correct answer is produced. The groups make interaction especially fun for young people because they can use Emoji’s to show all manner of reactions to a certain answer, for example putting a smiling face or even laughing. WhatsApp groups can make the cellphone a powerful learning tool since even students that usually shy out from participating during class lessons can comment without fear as they feel motivated by not being surrounded by a lot of people.

The cellphone can also be used as an educational tool that enhances the communication of learners by allowing them to meet and interact with each other on social sites. Twitter and Facebook are common sites where a lot of learners frequent and use to make inquiries. The cellphone can allow people that want to go for higher learning to easily look for the best schools with courses of their choice without much struggle. Today people can use their cellphone to log into their Facebook or Twitter accounts and post the kind, of course, they want to study and their preferred country and then leave their cell number for their friends who may have useful information regarding a suitable college. People with useful information can call and even help the individual apply and make the necessary arrangements to join the college. Comparisons can also be made using the different offers given because alumni from different colleges comment about both their good and bad experiences in particular schools and help others in making informed decisions when selecting the schools to study in. The cellphone can, therefore, be a useful educational tool by helping learners to select and join the best schools (Verbik, Line & Veronica 13).

The cellphones can also help the students in time management that is essential to successful learning. Cellphones have different features that can enable the students to manage their time effectively. For example, almost every cellphone comes with a calendar and an alarm. Students that usually experience challenges in waking up to prepare for school or even study for the exams can benefit from the alarms. The cellphones also have reminders that are set to notify the students of critical activities that they are supposed to undertake. The calendar can help the students to mark important dates in the semester and especially their continuous assessment dates so that they can be prepared early enough and achieve their desired grades.

Learning through the Internet

Modern cellphones can connect to the Internet at high speed, and the Internet contains limitless academic resources as well links to the best tutors and academic mentors for students. The students can access many online libraries from any location provided there is network connectivity and complete their projects without necessarily having to spend their time in the school library. The learners can also view educational YouTube videos from their cellphones and also share them with their classmates (Anderson 15). There are also some dedicated online teachers that assist students from different disciplines to learn and acquire practical knowledge. The Internet also hosts millions of tutorials. Learners that have access to cellphones can download such tutorials and build their knowledge (Sandars, John & Catriona 86).

In conclusion cellphones can be critical educational tools because they can facilitate online learning that makes studying much convenient especially to people who are already working and have young families. Students need to be taught on how to utilize features of their cellphones for learning and not to just concentrating on downloading applications that they use for entertainment. The potential of the cellphone in education has not yet been fully implemented, and players in the education sector need to work hard towards incorporating the cellphones fully to be used for educational purposes. Governments also need to start investing in the creation of more education applications.
