Behavioral chain refers to the certain sections involved in the performance of certain behavior or an event in which behavior units occurs in sequence are linked together by learned causes. These sections usually follow a certain pattern in the course of that behavior.
Task analysis is a process whereby one explores how an activity is accomplished. It can also be said to be the observing ordinary users in action as they perform some task to understand how they reach their goals. It employs scientific skills such as research techniques. The result is normally a breakdown of an activity into stages that guarantee its accomplishment.
Forward Chaining is a psychological tool usually used for training of skills. A skill is normally broken down into stages comprising it until the desired skill is arrived at. Forward chaining starts from the first stage up to the last stage (Herbart & Mulliner, 2012).
Backward chaining is also employed during training. In this method a skill is normally taught starting from the last stage backwards until one arrives at the beginning. The trainer teaches using reverse model of the chain of stages.
Total Task Chaining
A total task chaining is a situation where the trainer emphasizes on the importance of each stage and always goes back to the previous stages before moving on to a new one. It also follows forward chaining model only that it recalls a previous stage.
Factors Influencing a Behavioral Chain’s Performance
Some of the factors that influence behavioral chains performance are;
- The longer a behavioral chain is the longer it may take to learn and vice versa. This is because one has to systematically follow the chain and avoid missing any step as that would lead to a different result at the end.
- Effective task analysis may enhance the chains performance. This is because it help in linking all the chains steps and therefore making the whole process effective.
- Choice of the chaining method. Different methods have different approached and therefore making it critical to consider the chain methods considered in line with the goal to be achieved.
The task analysis for teaching involves various steps which include writing down the steps to be follows. The next step is observing how someone else performs it. This is followed by watching others and doing research. The next step is doing the task or rather the teaching activity itself through introducing the skills to be learnt. The trainees are taken through the various things to be trained. The last step is assessing the understanding of the students which is aimed to knowing whether the method is effective and if not help one to understand how to change it.
I would employ total task chaining for maximum understanding of the skill. This procedure requires the students to perform the entire task until the task is learned. This ensures that all the students grasp what is being trained before they are assessed. The persistence and the insisting of the steps by this changing procedure also make understanding easy for the trainees.
The reason as to why I selected the chain method is because the skill is assumed to be new to the learners total task chaining is most efficient. This therefore would enable them to systematically grasp what is being taught at ease and also ensure the tall the people move in the same direction before the learning effectiveness is implemented.
