Collaborative Decision Making through Shared Governance

Introduction

Shared form of governance model is designed to amalgamate values and beliefs used in profession practice to acquire quality care. It was established to ensure good working conditions for nurses, satisfaction, and remembrance throughout their lifetime when at the workplace (Zaraté, 2013).  The shared governance at UNC medical center is comprised of five nurse councils. The second part entailed watching the committee council closely and observing the relationship and interaction between committee members. Secondly, it identifies the process employed by the committee in making their decision and indicates the purpose and role of the committee (Stark & Fins, 2013).

The Interaction between Committee Members

The members of the council freely interact with one another to integrate the values and norms of different people. The interface was formulated to talk about the nurses and doctors work environment among others, which hindered the delivery of quality services to the patients. The committee council had different opinions, which seemed to converge to a common conclusion (Stark & Fins, 2013). However, some did not relate well with the rest making the meeting to lag and consume massive time. Likewise, the committee was accounting for the nurse’s grievances, which impeded delivery of excellent services. However, the council had to come into a consensus.

The Process Used by the Committee to arrive to the Decision

The committee members had different opinions to improve work staff environment in UNC medical center. Everybody’s decision was considered since all of the opinions were correct and needed a hearing. As a result, the group leader convinced every member to have a common conclusion (Stark & Fins, 2013). The secret ballot had to be used since members had different opinions, and others seconded their cohort’s viewpoints. The process is a shared governance since its principle aim was to integrate different values of the nurses to come up with a common measure thereby improving healthcare. Moreover, the council also wanted to eradicate any resentment from the patients regarding poor services by nurses.

Function of the Committee and the Roles of those in Attendance

The committee is supposed to make decisions, which will govern the nurses and the doctors. The main purpose of forming the committee was to advocate for good working conditions that would lead to satisfaction. That was the main function of the committee and those in attendance. The services delivered to the patients are partly determined by the staff satisfaction (Zarate, 2013). For instance, if the nurses are not comfortable where they live, they are likely to deliver poor services to the patients. In addition, a quiet and clean environment is essential to the patients’ health to prevent further infection (Zarate, 2013). As a result, good services are rendered to the patients and the nurses enjoy the conducive working conditions.

Conclusively, good services are offered if the employee are satisfied. Mistreatment of employees leads to poor service delivery. If the working conditions are poor, the care rendered is also substandard. The same case happens to the medical institutions where nurses fail to deliver quality care to patients. Stark and Fins (2013) claim that to ensure good care, shared grievances must apply to combine all the employees’ values leading to harmony in the workplace.
