Introduction

Correctional employees over time are faced with series of challenges in the course of performing their duty. Their careers are so difficult to some extent that they tend to indulge in activities that are unacceptable in those premises.  Stress correctional misconduct has been found to be the main issue that is experienced by correctional employees. Finally, it will be able to propose measures that might be taken to reduce the stated types of misconduct in the correctional field while also bringing into consent the different challenges that are likely to be experienced in the cause of the action to curb the misconduct (Beck, 2015).

Types of misconducts engaged

Physical abuse

Physical abuse has been discovered to be one of the significant types of misconduct that correctional officers have been committing. It ranges from torturing of the inmates for no reason by the offices and forcefully making them do things that are against the laws. In the facility the main thing that has been triggering it is the level of authority that the police officers have over the inmates. It is the main thing that makes the officers feels that they have powers to mistreat the inmates (Hodge & Yoder, 2017). The evidence that has led to conclude that the inmates are physically abused is is the high number of reported inmates in the prison dispensary due to breakage of their arms to a critical situation such as gun wounds.

To combat physical abuse of the correctional officers, it only depends on coming upon with policies that govern the inmates against physical mistreatment without critical reasons. The plans should be passed as a law whereby those police officers that would be found to have committed such mistakes are taken to justice. However, the passing of statutes sometimes is tough since the same people who are supposed to pass laws might be compromised through bribery by the police fraternity to ensure that such policies are not implemented (Hodge & Yoder, 2017).

Sexual misconduct

There are different types of sexual misconduct committed by correctional employees which might be verbal harassment, improper touching, consensual sex, and inappropriate visual surveillance. The most reported type is the consensual relations which usually happen between the inmates and the correctional officers. The reason for such misconduct is due to the great deal of power that correctional officers pose over the inmates. Regardless of it, the officers might be the ones who would be triggering the relationship with the inmates, or otherwise the inmates befriending officers and ultimately using the ties to rule infractions. Other correctional officers that have been found to commit sexual misconduct are the treatment professionals and the parole officers. During treatment, most of the officers tend to violate the inmates sexually through rapes (Farley, & Pike, 2016).

However, sexual misconduct can be prevented through deploying of surveillance cameras in areas such as dispensary and ensuring close monitoring of every minute activity that happens. It will provide that inmates are safe in such seclusion areas that sexual harassment might take place. Unfortunately, surveillance cameras might limit the privacy of the inmates together with the treatment professionals (Farley & Pike, 2016). Other measures that could be deployed to curb such misconducts are providing the inmates with a system whereby they can raise alarms whenever they feel that their security is being compromised.  The inmates should also be educated about their bright from sexual harassment. It will help to ensure that they are repellent to such acts and ensure that they report immediately when such actions happen.

Contraband smuggling

Smuggling of prohibited items in the prisons and jails has also been found to become a significant problem. It involves trafficking in drugs, cigarettes, mobile phones among other prohibited materials. The employees who are mostly involved in smuggling of these items are the guards, treatment professionals among other corrections employees. The misconduct has drawn a lot of concern in most of the countries worldwide, and researchers discovered that the motivations of this acts are so varied. Correctional employees are mostly motivated by greed through bribes from prisoners while others smuggle drugs for their use. Different scholars have drawn various reasons why the correctional officers might be smuggling illicit drugs for their use among them the low morale among the correctional employees and the poor working conditions that limit them have a need to work in intoxicated conditions (Williams, 2014).

Other reasons that might be triggering the employees to smuggle contraband items would be the inadequate payments that they receive. As long As they are receiving insufficient wages, they are likely to develop financial incentive that will make them accept bribes and smuggle the items. Prisoners might also be allowed insufficient access to telephone services, therefore, making them grow a need for their phones, thus, encouraging the officers to participate in smuggling of the cell phones. The best strategy to combat contraband smuggling but some of the correctional officers are ensuring that all prison and jail officers are scanned before they enter the correctional facility. Modern technology should be used to do the scanning since it will provide that they will not be able to smuggle illicit items. However, when staffs are involved in searching their colleague’s unethical misconduct such as corruption tend to emanate so that they protect their co-workers (Williams, 2014).

Conclusion

Correctional misconducts might be drawn from different types of correctional officers since a prison or jail is composed of multifaceted departments that deal with various areas. The main problem that is found is the determination of how often such misconducts happen. The most known fault that has been reported by different facilities is the physical abuse of inmates by the officers. Misconducts should be addressed by the immediate management of the facility, and they should ensure that critical penalties are given to any officer that is found guilty of any misconduct. The inmate and general safety of every person in a correctional facility are dependent on the honesty and hardworking attributes that are collectively achieved. Challenges to measures that are employed to combat the misconduct are inevitable, however; officers in charge should address them whenever they occur.
