Self-acceptance is when people are able to embrace all facts about themselves and not just the positive or more estimable parts of their lives. Self-esteem on the other hand refers to the value or the worth that people attach to themselves. This help people to interact feely and also have a positive thinking that even if people say negative things about them they are able to view that differently and that should not affect their performance at work.

  • Why is it important to understand that in order to value diversity I don’t have to agree with the difference?

Discrimination cannot be justified even if someone is not in agreement with whatever line someone takes. This therefore means that to understand the difference one has to try and be empathetic such that they put themselves in other peoples shoes. This should run across even the stations that they don’t fully understand or fully agree with.

  • Define the three approaches to diversity.

The three approaches of diversity are valuing differences, affirmative action and managing diversity.

Valuing differences: it focuses on accepting, understanding and respecting differences. This can be driven by ethnicity and is essential for any cultural change.

Affirmative Action: It focuses on achievement of equal opportunities through including the people who are formally excluded. This include in places like hiring, current recruitments, promotions and other issues that are driven by systematized discrimination. This is done to achieve a multicultural workplace.

Managing diversity: This considers creating policies and putting emphasis on building specific skills that gets the best from all the employees.

  • What reasons does the text state regarding how harmful “not” having cultural knowledge is to diversity.

This is because without the knowledge it is easy for someone to believe that negative media portrays and news accounts that plaguing certain people. It is also important to learn about certain groups at early age as this gives an insight of their contribution in the society.

  • What is cultural competency and how does cultural sensitivity and cultural awareness contribute to cultural competence.

Cultural competence on the other hand can be said to be the set of congruent attitudes, behaviors and policies that come together in an agency, system or other professionals. This brings about working effectively in cross-cultural situations.

Cultural sensitivity helps in knowing the cultural differences and similarities without assigning some value to them. This could be for example wright or wrong, better or worse etc.

Cultural awareness helps in development of understanding and sensitivity of other ethnic groups and this is in terms of values and attitude.

  • Define the following terms: prejudice, stereotypes, and discrimination. Explain how prejudices or stereotypes can lead to discrimination in the workplace.

Prejudice is an unfair bias that doesn’t allow for individual differences which might be good or bad.

Stereotypes on the other hand are generalized assumptions that concern a characteristic or trait of all members of a particular group.

Discrimination is the unjust treatment of certain individuals or groups of people.

Prejudice does not allow people to show their difference whether good or bad and therefore using this rule to govern the workplace could lead to certain levels of discriminations as people are not free to show their differences. Stereotype on the other hand considers certain traits of individuals and this can be used to discriminate other people who lack the trait under consideration.

  • Explain why the phrase “America is a melting pot” is a myth and should not be utilized to value diversity.

The blending of more people from different backgrounds has registered an increased trend but culture identity is still maintained. This therefore disqualifies the on the above theory.

  • Write down what defines you as a person.

I think I am a keen observe and like concentrating so much on my strengths. This has enabled me to overcome some of my weaknesses slowly by slowly and viewing my life and interaction with other people in a positive way. This has also promoted my sense of viewing my similarity with other people as this is the main treason as to why I am able to merge and interact with people freely.

  • How do you think others categorize you when they first see you?

I think other people see me as a serious, focused and a free person to associate with and this promote my indication with them as that freeness makes me build a relationship with people very fast and start interacting with them freely.

  • Do you categorize others from different ethnicities than you when you see them? Why do you think people do this?

In don’t categorize other people from different ethnicities when I view them. I view all people equally. The reason as to why people categorize others from different ethnicities when they see them could be because of the upbringing. The early bringing of a child makes them interact freely with people from different ethnicities and therefore when they grow in such a relationship they are able to vie wall people equally. I think raising kids in isolations has great contribution towards this.

A Latin cannot speak proper English: being a Latin there is an assumption that one cannot speak proper English or cannot be in a position to learn and practice proper English. This is not the case though since the lady in the video is a Latin and has learnt speaking English through the school system and even is not in a position to speak Latin fluently but that shouldn’t make her less of a Latin or less of American.

A black women disowns her identity: The first impression on how someone views someone should not drive the into conclusion of assuming that they are not comfortable the way they are or they don’t know what transpires in the society.

White girls are entitled and privileged: it is wrong to assume that simply because one is a white they enjoy all the privileges and they assume that others don’t deserve the same.
