Diversity Experience

Society for human resource management defines diversity as a feature existing in a mixed workforce. Diversity gives a variety of activities which include the range of experience, knowledge and various strengths. The nature of diversity is based on age, background and various beliefs that people possess.

According to united way, diversity refers to the quality of uniqueness displayed at an individual level or group level. This includes difference in age, sex, language, nationality, social status, abilities and one’s skin color. Experiences, nation, and culture shape an individual’s perspectives.

According to RBC, diversity is any means that can be used to give the difference between people. Diversity means showing respect and appreciating differences people regarding ethnicity, origin, education, and religion.

According to Coca-Cola Company, diversity refers to an environment characterized by equal access to information, equal development, and opportunity. Coca-Cola Company views diversity as means of operation which should be applied now and in future. The company creates an inclusive work environment by giving leverage to its global associate’s team which is characterized by diverse people.

My definition of diversity is that it is a situation where different people are involved in the achievement of a common goal. Diversity goes hand in hand with global inclusivity whose major focus is based on ensuring that people are subjected to an environment where they can exhibit their potential. Inclusiveness should be part of the culture of an organization and practices that give support to a diverse work environment.

The definitions line up with my diversity awareness because they contain the most important trends which have enhanced the relevance of diversity. The first trend is the United States global market which has grown to be competitive. The second one is the change in the population of the United States. The third is that individuals have developed a culture where they celebrate their differences and do not compromise their uniqueness to fit in.

Global Market

The strength of an economy relies on the ability of a country to engage in business with other countries based in different sections of the world. For the United States to remain relevant in the market, products designed and manufactured by the country must accommodate other cultures. The best marketing strategies must also be adopted. For such activities to be successful, diverse people have together to negotiate and plan on the best way to succeeding.

Changing Demographics

Over the years, the population of United States has been growing with a large number of immigrants rising. Currently, more than 40 percent of the United States population is occupied by immigrants. Groups growing at a high rate are Asians and Latinos. These groups occupy regions such as Mexico, California, Texas, and Hawaii. With such an increase in diverse population, people learn to live together as a community and understand each other.

Change in Concept.

In the past, the nature of the approach to diversity among Americans was based on assimilation. People coming into the country were expected to conform to American culture, adopt the lifestyle and language of Americans. A major challenge associated with the culture of assimilation is that difference is equated to deficiency.  In the current society, individuals maintain their own culture and patterns involved. These include the language they speak, religious norms and lifestyle. The differences are much valued and incorporated with appreciation. Individuals can, therefore, be proud of their cultures and unique nature as opposed to being embarrassed by the differences they possess. Currently, it is hard to identify America based on one culture. The United States may be viewed as being multicultural.

I have had several life experiences which have influenced my overview of diversity. My culture has enabled me to realize that people from other ethnic backgrounds deserve to be accommodated. Racism and having a preformed attitude towards people belonging to a certain tribe is prohibited. About my work environment, I have learned to work with people from different races. Being part of positive relations enhances teamwork, helps get rid of being stereotypic and minimizes harassment.

Being a Philadelphian makes me part of a community who loves sports. Philadelphians may actively engage in sports, or they may do it passively. Sporting activities require that people who possess different ethnic dimensions come together during matches and sporting events. People from my community achieve success in their games by learning to appreciate the differences they possess.

Diversity situations vary depending on circumstances. I have encountered diversity situation in my school. I have studied with people from different social backgrounds, races, religion, abilities, and gender. The most important thing to note is that the school came up with a way of ensuring that all these people fit well in a learning environment.

There are different places of worship for people coming from different denominations. For instance, a chapel for Christians exists.   The school appreciates people of different gender by recognizing that equal opportunity should be provided for both genders. Discrimination against people with disabilities is prohibited. The disabled are accommodated by ensuring that facilities they need are provided. Though they study in different classes and forums, the amount of fee charged to them is fair. In most schools, school uniform is worn by each student. This is helpful in equalizing students, especially in cases where some students come from well up families while others do not.

In the work environment, respect and teamwork are tools that assist in achieving goals. Accepting differences among individuals is important. With the acceptance of these, respect and opportunity are generated.

Diversity has been applied in the workplace where employees from different cultural background bring their ideas together. They help analyze a matter at hand and use various perspectives to handle it. Employees who come from the same culture may not be as effective as those from different cultures. This is because people from different cultures possess different experiences which help provide a good base for knowledge. Also, once people share their experiences, their perspectives on certain issues change.

Another situation where diversity has been applied in the workplace is when the organization is overcoming culture shock. When a company is expanding to become international, several changes are witnessed. The company management needs to have more information about the countries they are expanding their businesses to. In such a case, having people from that country will be an advantage because acquiring information concerning the country will be easy. For instance, when an American company wishes to extend its business operations to India, information on federal laws, insurances applied and various tax regulations can be borrowed from an Indian colleague.

In conclusion, the knowledge of diversity has created awareness through various experiences gained. Learning how to coexist and be accommodative of other people helps promote diversity.
