Web-based media are mostly used at any time of the day and any location. The platforms are easily accessible thereby making them convenient to use at any time. Personally, I use the listed Web-based media at the desk when for example carrying out research (Flanagin & Metzger, 2007). For example Facebook is easy to access and use and offers a wide range of communication network. With a simple click, a person is able to communicate with a wide range of people located millions of miles away thereby making it convenient. In marketing, this wide range of audience is fundamental to the success of marketing strategies applied. The web-based media are also configured to be accessible via other portable and more convenient devices like tablets, smartphones, and laptops (Flanagin & Metzger, 2007). The devices ensure that an individual utilizing the web-based media does not require to be stationed at a particular point to enjoy the services of media such as Facebook and Twitter. The accessibility through portable devices play a pivotal role in the frequent use of the media. I use the platforms while travelling or while held up in other situations. Devices such as tablets and smartphones are easy to carry along when performing different activities or commuting over long distances which is contrary to the desktops. Therefore, the accessibility of the web-based media through the devices is important.

The web-based media are also operational at any time of the day. Their accessibility is not limited to time periods or depend on a schedule (Flanagin & Metzger, 2007). A person performing different activities at different times of the day may still access the web-based media at the time of convenience to them without any negative results. An individual can access web-based media such as Facebook at night and they will still be able to track all the activities that occurred during the day without any interference with the schedule of the person (Flanagin & Metzger, 2007). The convenience saves a person the need to rush and make reschedules to attend to different matters.

I put to use the aforementioned web-based media platforms while reading, researching, travelling and when performing many other activities. Sites like Facebook and Twitter are mostly used while an individual is doing other activities and are rarely the sole activity a person is carrying out (Dabbagh & Kitsantas, 2012). While travelling, the media can be used to kill boredom and ensure one is participating in an activity throughout the journey. It also keeps the mind refreshed and stops an individual from being idle. The media are also a source of entertainment as people mostly use the platforms to share jokes and post videos that are funny in nature (Dabbagh & Kitsantas, 2012). The undertaking enables the mind of the person using them to be functional throughout the utilization of the media. Web-based media can also be used while someone is reading. They can be used to carry out research to improve and facilitate reading but also can act as a hindrance to the concentration of the reader. When used without caution, web-based media consumes time that could be used carrying out more constructive activities and results to negative effects. The media are also platforms where help can be accessed to facilitate the reading of an individual. They are also a source of information access (Dabbagh & Kitsantas, 2012). People also use the media services while at their workplaces thereby interfering with their efficiency and concentration.

Carrying out other activities while using the media services limits an individual’s involvement and focus. It also hinders the experience one has during the utilization of the media services and the communication with other people through the media platforms. For example when one is using the media services while reading, he or she is not fully involved with the activities taking place at the platform (Dabbagh & Kitsantas, 2012). The level of involvement is limited and one does not gain the numerous advantages the media services may offer. The focus is also reduced thereby limiting their use. When a person is not fully focused on an activity, the outcome of the activity may not be the best. Carrying out multiple activities at the same time reduces the focus and has a negative effect to the outcome of the activity.

The experience of interacting with the media is not fully enjoyed while a person is doing other activities while using the media. The attention of the person using the media is not fully on the media, which may result to the individual missing on important details that may be of huge effect. One does not fully experience the many advantageous features of the web-based media (Dabbagh & Kitsantas, 2012). The communication with other people through the media is also limited. When an individual is doing other activities, they will automatically be slow in their response while communicating thereby hindering communication through these media.

Web-based media is a platform for interaction with other people where they are easily approachable and communication is simplified. A community in the Web-based media is a virtual setting where the members primarily interact through the internet. It offers the comfort of home where people who have never met become friends and interact via the Web-based media (Dabbagh & Kitsantas, 2012). Online community is established by people who have a common interest and normally communicate through a specific site like Facebook.

In development of identity, one observes the internet etiquette as the community develops a good fit. The main purpose of an online community is to offer a common ground for individuals who have similar interests. In order to develop one’s identity, an individual needs to observe certain values which include education, economy equity, opportunity, sustainability, democracy, communication, culture and human services (Bishop, 2008). The values develop the identity of an individual and enhances his or her importance in the online community. The Web-based communities may be used to track events in the calendar and may be developed around activities of common interests. The communities are also used to offer services of the greater good to the society and avail information to one another, which may be of great importance.

Compare and contrast your perceptions and approaches to current research

The perception of Web-based media as a platform for interaction is similar to the research carried out. Many individuals using Web-based media primarily use it as a platform where they can interact with one another and get information and details about different things via the interactions (Bishop, 2008). The platforms are also perceived as a source of information on current matters and a fast method of conveying messages. The main difference is on people who approach Web-based media as an entertainment source while research indicates that it is an information pool.
