Northern Plains Berdache
Thayer, James Steel. (1980) The Berdache of the Northern Plains: A Socioreligious Perspective. Journal of Anthropological Research, 36 (3), 287 -293.
The Berdache is a symbolic figure in the Northern Plains social system. Northern Plains Indians had a very distinct sexual division of labor. Men were hunters, warriors and shamans and women were mothers, gathers and in control of the household. If a boy could not socialize into the required functions of masculinity then boys would find a social niche of the Berdache. Thayers paper discusses from a holistic perspective previous emic works on the Berdache, current research on how the Berdache fit into ritual activities of the Northern Plain Indians and how the Berdache integrate themselves intellectually and ritually within the life of women.
