Resilience and Student’s Mental Health
Resilience, in general terms, is the ability to recover from something quickly due to a display of determination and will power. Students contend with everyday pressures resulting from schoolwork and other aspects of life. Losing their sanity is a likely possibility. The essay purposes to evaluate resilience from a mental state-based perspective and the implications. It will pay special attention to students. Therefore, meaningful insight will be gained from the undertaken discussion.
Factors behind Loss of Mental Stability
As already discussed above academic pressures are the main culprits behind student’s loss of proper mental health. It is worthwhile to note that different courses or academic programs call for varying levels of commitment and workload. However, this type of stress dramatically varies (White, Suzanne and Gainey 201). A good example is a medical student compared to a bachelor of art students. The difference in stress levels also advocates various coping mechanisms; some students resort to substance abuse, which serves to worsen the overall mental state.
Personal issues are also the cause of stress, which is a significant contributor to poor mental state. The problems may result from family feuds or friend based disagreements. It is important to note that while excessive stress is a significant contributor toward poor mental health, depression is also a significant factor. Personal issues equally brings about it. It works collaboratively with stress to diminish a person’s mental health. Substance abuse is another major contributor to poor psychological health in academic setup. These different factors are profoundly connected together since stress and depression are the primary reasons behind substance abuse. Different categories of drugs all have divergent effects on the user depending on the nature of the drug itself. For example, tobacco smoking has health issues pertaining to lungs, but extensively on mental health. Narcotics such as Marijuana and heroin have the most far fetching effects mentally, for average users. It is often documented that a person under the influence is capable of doing just about anything and hence can endanger lives of others around.
Effects of Unstable Mental Health
Having unstable mental health is disadvantageous not only to the person under the influence, but also the individuals in his or her immediate vicinity. The most profound effect is lack of concentration; a person may spend countless hours attending lectures and be unable to grasp a great deal of the content communicated by the speaker. Such lack of concentration usually equals poor grades and individuals can end up dropping from school in the event of circumstances (Carney 190). In addition to the above, another profound effect is the state of being violent. Individuals with poor mental state, as already documented above, are in a condition where they can virtually do anything without having to worry about the various implications involved (White et al. 111). This is an example of an effect that affects the society as a whole.
Effects that are more indirect include the loss of productive people in society hence the economy suffers terribly. In order to fully combat and prevent the occurrence of poor mental states, there are a number of factors, which need to be taken into great account. Research has indicated that many approaches toward combating poor psychological health focus on solving the problem at hand rather than solving it for good. In essence, such practices lack the resilience factor, and hence they are likely to reoccur. It is true that most students turn to counseling centers whenever they are facing some stresses or personal issues, the only real flaw that is present in the system is the apparent lack of resilience. The following section touches on the subject of resilience and how well it can be integrated into mental treatment services for the best, long-term results.
Resilience and Proper Mental Health
Resilience, as already discussed above, is the act of quickly recovering from a state due to a variety of factors. These factors mainly comprise of willpower and determination. Resilience establishes a purpose whose achievement is the ultimate goal. According to research, resilience is an essential factor since it helps students to respond technically in healthy and adaptive ways when faced with stressful situations. They are able to manipulate the situation in their favor and hence by doing so, solve the issues in the best most precise way possible.
As already discussed, resilient students are able to handle their issues all on their own, and most do not resort to professional help. Despite the various collective problems experienced by students as a result of an even blend of the academic issues and personal strife’s, resilient students are able to apply critical thinking and make the best out of the situation (White et al. 200). In addition to this, they are also able to pursue their lifelong goals and dreams. In terms of contrast, individuals who pass college life with exceptional grades do so mainly thanks to the resilient factor in their lifestyles (Carney 180).
In truth, no one is able to control the risk factors, which serve to inflict stress and emotional instability into their lives; the only real difference is how one chooses to deal with the issues. As seen above, the best way to approach the problems is with a resilient mindset. In light of this insight, one cannot help but wonder, how can one train students to have resilient based mindsets? This is genuinely a wisdom-oriented query, and the answers can be obtained through considering the following scenarios. It is important to note that while an individual is directly responsible for his or her own development of the resilient mindset, the society is also primarily involved. Below are some of the ways in which the aspect of Resilience can be built upon college students.
How Resilience can be built on College Students
One of the most common ways of ensuring Resilience is built upon college students is having them focus on areas of their lives where they, to a significant degree, feel confident and successful. This may be in a sport or talent. If a patient feels that he or she excels in the singing genre, proper Resilience-based therapy will have him or her focus on that area (White et al. 211). This is mainly so that the individual can have a factor to hold on to whenever they feel depressed or stressful. Prompting the students to focus on their areas of success is also the basis of improving the area or being better at it. In conclusion, inspiring the students to focus on the areas where they thrive is one way of fostering resilience.
Another way of ensuring resilience is guiding the students in examining and entirely annihilating any negative thought patterns that may serve to defeat their spirit. A person, for instance, may feel alone mainly because he or she does not have a lot in common with many of her peers, such a disrupted mindset is likely to lead to general acts of isolation. Resilience will be ensured once the individual is prompted that it is okay to be different. Guiding the student to nest this fact is the most suitable way of fostering resilience. As a result, she will significantly accept the state of affairs and try to make the best out of it. Working to kill these negative mindsets, which are self-demeaning, assures proper resilience.
In light of the above, the best way to ensure students develop long-lasting, resilient spirit is having them be part of something great. Individuals who are part of a group always have the spirit, will, and determination of being part of a team and as a result, resilience is developed in the real sense. In a college setting, for instance, resilience can be achieved as a result of being an active member of various groups clubs and societies
Notably, one cannot fail to note the overall significance of resilience toward fostering proper mental health. In addition to this, it also helps to foster one’s spirit, and he or she has actual more considerable chances of achieving goals and dreams. Counselors and other individuals who counsel students mentally should take into account the significance of resilience and apply it to their overall therapy. In essence, resilience may reduce the reoccurrence of future cases and the students may be entirely mentally free.
