social media

Argumentative essay

Dear Reader,

Over the years most of the teenagers have incorporated social media into their lives.  I believe that social media is most likely to affect face to face conversations among teenagers because communication and socialization skills of the teenagers are affected either directly or indirectly by social media. It is important for the government to come up with a means of helping teenagers quit social media. This can be achieved by having mandatory training sessions that discourage teenagers from using social media until they reach an age where they are through with school. I believe that once they are done with school, an individual will understand how to use social media without letting it interrupt face to face conversation On these sessions, the teenagers are taught why it is important to stop using social media by having facts on effects of social media put across. The government should also introduce sessions for parents of teenagers where they are taught the importance of helping their children quit social media. These may include training on the dangers of too much use of social media. The importance will be based on the negative effects social media has on teenage.  A policy of ensuring that any person logging into a website first goes through age verification should be introduced. The government should also ensure that they track and register IP addresses for devices used and match them with the age so that the teens are redirected to sites which match their age. Parents should also ensure that they monitor networks at home to ensure that teenagers do not access websites that contain information that ruins their morals. Minimal use of social media will help reduce the problem of face to face conversation among teenagers.

Some of the strengths of researching this topic are that social media is an issue that constantly affects the teenagers this, therefore, makes it find the information. Different people have opinions concerning the subject.  Problems which may be encountered are issues such as inadequate fund and resources, and there might be cases where teenagers do not feel like participating on issues involving them. If I had more days to carry out the research, I would place my focus on the empirical part of the project I intend to write. This is going to be important because it will help me focus on the various trends. The question I intend to have an argumentative essay on is if social media affects face to face conversations among teenagers.

Social media is bringing together various online channels used for communication meant to bring people together through interaction and collaboration. Teenagers have not been left behind Some of the communication platforms used include Instagram and Facebook. The websites facilitate sharing of memories, planning of events, friends get to be connected, and instant communication is achieved.Teenagers have hence become addicted to the trends and are unable to live without social media.

Initially, people got through to social media by use of computers. As technology evolved, people have an opportunity to access Smartphones whose applications make it possible to reach the kind of information a computer would reach. Upon the invention of the Smartphone, they did not sell well, but as people recognized the benefits that come along with the Smartphone, the purchases went up.  With Smartphones becoming popular, social media adapted some applications which would be able to function easily in Smartphones. Approximately 64 % of the population in the United States use Smartphones for operation, with over 206 million persons using social media platforms. There is also a population who still access information using computers. A large population approximately 76% of people, therefore, use social media. Because social media has not been in use for a while, it comes along with social issues that involve the interaction of people in real life, most especially the teenagers. To solve this problem, I believe the government should come up with a means that discourage teenagers from using social media until they have completed school. Teenagers will be taught evils of social media and the negative effect it has on their life at the particular age. They will be able to understand that it’s for their good that they quit social media. Since parents are mostly with their children when they are not in school, they will play a major role in offering assistance. For instance, the parents may choose to buy them phones which have no access to the internet.

First, social media has reduced physical interaction among teenagers and the persons they mostly engage with (Ahn 15). Teenagers can access social media at any time they wish to so long as they own Smartphones. Teenagers have therefore developed a tendency of preferring to communicate online because it is much easier. Easier means doing something small that attracts a greater audience. This has created an environment where teenagers have grown to be anti-social. Teenagers are therefore found to be less interactive( Burke 46). More to this, social media has made teenagers believe that one does not need to meet up with the other person for them to communicate effectively. Having a conversation on the phone using any social media platform is therefore found to be enough for them. This has constantly reduced the importance of having to meet up even when important cases come up. With changes introduced, teenagers will have more time for physical interaction. They would create time for each other, enhancing face to face communication.

I believe that the government should discourage use of social media among teenagers because those who are constantly on social media and who do not interact with each other have a problem when it comes to dealing with bullies. The government can ban the use of phones in school. This will be a way of minimizing the use of social media since during the day teenagers will just have to focus on their education and not phonesTeenagers have inadequate know-how when it comes to dealing with whatever is happening to them. They end up shutting down and not being able to face their issues. The absence of the ability to deal with situations that are stressful will pose a great challenge in future once they join the workforce. Dealing with issues at work and learning to accommodate each other at work will be an issue.

Language skills among teenagers have also become poor as a result of using social media. While online, English is somewhat neglected.  Use of shortened information as a means to deliver information quickly is an example. The challenge comes in when the teenagers try to incorporate the use of shortened information into the day to day communication. Social skills of teenagers have decreased because they have a hard time delivering information without the use of colloquial speech. On adopting the use of slang, people who do not use or understand its use will often feel out of place.

The government and parents should discourage teenagers from using social media because it has reduced etiquette among the teenagers. Social media limits what a speaker may mean to say and the tone which the person is texting uses may come out wrong. By using social media, politeness and good manners is losing its meaning. Teenagers risk this extending to the workplace. Teenagers may use wrong vocabulary when showing emotions. If discouraged till at a later age after school, teenagers will learn to use etiquette in their language. They will not have to worry about the tone they are using since they will be minimal online interactions.

Social media should be prohibited because it causes cyberbullying among teenagers. Teenagers found to be having emotional distress are found to perform less in their social life. Instead of putting the focus on important matters in their life such as making friends in real life, they work to make their online presence more reputable and repaired. This mindset reduces the ability of teenagers to make friends because they have a belief that people surrounding them at school and home may judge them in the same way social media does. They, therefore, avoid bullying by being less interactive. They also have a challenge when it comes to quitting social media. Reliance on social media for happiness and feeling of accomplishment can be disappointing and may lead to esteem issues. The reforms introduced by the government will help teenagers improve performance on their social life. The fear of being wrongly judged will not exist, and they will not have to be worried about their online reputation.

The government should discourage students from the effects of social media because it acts as destruction. One way can be an invention of other mind occupying activities such as weekly games with rewards. This will ensure that majority of the time teenagers will be busy rehearsing to make their teams win thus they will have limited time for social media.Teenagers spend much of their time concentrating on what is currently happening on the various platforms (Rai 11). As a result, they are unable to concentrate in class, in churches and even in family meetings. In a situation where teenagers are sited together, it is very hard to find them engaging in conversations. Most of their attention is always on the phone (Baruah 12). This affects them because they will hardly create stable relationships among themselves. Friendships bonds which are often created through one on one conversation are therefore weakened (Burke 46). As a result, teenagers have a hard time creating and developing trust among each other. Teenagers are also found to build romantic relationships online which will never work and are temporary in most cases.

Social media also affects teenagers’ performance in their class work. Most of the teenagers end up spending so much time on social media and put less emphasis on class work. There are also cases where teenage students carry phones to class, and instead of being attentive to what is being taught, they focus on what is happening in social media (Ahn 15). Teenage students also end up not finishing home works and assignments given to them by their teachers. They end up having poor performance. This is risking their future because they are the people that the society depends on to be productive. Once the government has introduced training sessions meant to discourage social media use, the performance of teenagers will improve since the time they spend on social media will be diverted to class work. There will be no need for them to carry their phones to class. This will improve their productivity and level of seriousness in class.

Social media creates an avenue where teenagers get to meet people from different backgrounds, countries, and walks of life. Friendships develop as a result of such. However, as much as friendships come of it, teenagers risk their safety when the friendships reach a point where they have to meet up. There are people whose intentions are not pure and are out to endanger the lives and security of others. In a case where a teenager chooses to trust and decide to meet up with such a person, they are putting a risk on their security. By not using social media, teenagers will be safer.
