The CSP for this module consists of two separate and distinct sections plus an introduction with a thesis statement and a relevant conclusion. Part A is a team-based project and Part B is to be developed by each individual student.

Part B of the CSP is 2-3 pages in length and uses a fictitious company as its backdrop.  Each student is to pick and assume one of the following scenarios:

You are a supervisor of a non-union department within an imaginary company. You have heard through the grapevine that employees are considering joining a union. Your goal is to, by any legal and ethical methods available to you, head off this unionization effort. Your discussion should include what you can and cannot do prior to National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) election certification. It should also include your legal action steps after the NLRB has ruled that an election is in order.  For this portion of the CSP, you are to outline the steps you will take to legally thwart this attempt to organize.

  • You are a supervisor of a male and female employee clerical department within an imaginary company. An employee has come to you alleging that one of your male employees is sexually harassing another female employee.  This employee wants you to do something and is visibly upset. For this portion of the CSP, outline the steps that you will take to legally address the issue.
  • You supervise a group of manufacturing plant employees in an imaginary company.  You know that you have several Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) compliance issues and are ripe for an OSHA inspection. For this portion of the CSP, you need to discuss how you will come into compliance. What steps will you take to prepare for that inspection?
  • You are a supervisor of a department within an imaginary company.  You have a serious employee safety compliance issue. The infraction violates company policy, but the policy has been ignored for years. Employees don’t want to change and feel that it’s a violation of their right to do the job the way they want to. Complying with policy will take longer and is costly to implement. For this portion of the CSP, you need to discuss how you will get employees to come into compliance and maintain current high standards of performance.
  • You run a small business. Your employees (a secretary, an engineer, an accounting clerk, an office manager and two outside sales people) are requesting overtime for hours worked in excess of 40 in any calendar week.   How do you respond to their requests?  What laws apply and why?  Find an online website that will help you in this endeavor.  Lay out and discuss a detailed plan of how you will legally and ethically address their demands. What role should human resources play in your dilemma?

Your CSP Part B discussion should be thorough, relevant and legal. You have Management and a Human Resources Department to assist you, but the success or failure of your plan rests on your ability to implement the steps you outline in this paper. Part B should also have a reference list that outlines the research done on your part to develop your plan.
