The United States Postal Service has been feeling the financial strain of competing with several other non-governmental delivery services such as Fed EX, UPS, and others. Customers are beginning to utilize online shopping at a rapidly growing pace. However, with so many packages being delivered that do not fit in the average mailbox, these packages are being left on customer’s doorsteps. This has led to a rise in mail theft, leaving the USPS to come up with a solution.
New Product, New Mission Statement
The USPS has developed a new product called the Package Drop Box. It is a large receptacle placed in front of the customers home that allows large packages to be dropped off, but only accessible to open with a key. Not all customers will be required to purchase one. It will be installed upon request. The customer will be charged a monthly fee of five dollars for the use of the Package Drop Box.
The USPS is putting together a new division to oversee the installation, upkeep, and payments for the Package Drop Box. The mission statement of the new division is peace of mind while you are away. This division is dedicated to listening to customer feedback and developing solutions.
Addressing Customer Needs
The USPS understands that most customers do not want a large box sitting in front of their home, diminishing the curb appeal. The customer can decide where to install the box. Most prefer to have it installed on the side of the home. Delivery services already have to walk packages to the door, so walking to the side of the home is not a problem. The USPS understands that there needs to be a way for the delivery service to know that the customer has a Drop Box installed. Therefore, the USPS will collaborate with all of the delivery services to give confirmation when a customer has one installed and when ordering online there will be a new option that asks if there is a Drop Box at the residence.
The New Vision Statement
With so many delivery options, the USPS has seen a decline in necessity of the public, but with the new Package Drop Box division, more and more customers will have a need for the services of the USPS. The vision statement for the Drop Box division is, continuing to put our stamp on America’s needs.
The USPS is an independent branch of the United Sates government and therefore does not operate in the same manner as other parcel services. They are financially backed by taxes and parcel delivery sales. However, with the addition of a monthly utility fee, they would generate higher revenues.
Aligning the New Division with an Existing Architecture
The USPS has an existing mission statement, according to “Postal Service Mission And “motto” ” (1999), ; The Postal Service shall have as its basic function the obligation to provide postal services to bind the Nation together through the personal, educational, literary, and business correspondence of the people. It shall provide prompt, reliable, and efficient services to patrons in all areas and shall render postal services to all communities. The new mission statement stays true to the original, but only adds a sense of security to the customer.
There currently is no recorded vision statement by the USPS. The new division will be the first vision statement of the Postal Service. This vision comes from the understanding that although the USPS is a governmental agency they are aware of the competition.
Utilizing the New Mission and Vision Statements
The new division was established as a means of creating more revenue while providing customers a greater sense of security. Package theft has been on the rise and people do not want to feel the need to rush home to get their package before it is swiped from their front door step. The Package Drop Box is in the infancy stage of implementation. The Drop Box division is willing to listen to customer feedback to in order to ensure that package safety and Drop Box placement needs are met.
The USPS’s motto according to “Postal Service Mission And “motto” ” (1999); Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds. This motto exemplifies the determination of the USPS to do whatever it takes to meet the needs of the customers. The new division will continue to strive for excellence, no matter the cost.
The needs of the American people are ever changing and the USPS has found a niche to fill for the people. People work too hard to have to worry about thieves stealing their mail. With the addition of the Package Drop Box citizens can be rest assured their packages will be waiting for them when they get home.
