What Women’s Studies is and what it isn’t
There is a commonly held belief that women studies exist for the sole benefit of women’s rights and women (Woolf, 2016). This is an attitude of misconception that has clouded women and their rights. Women studies typically involve critically reviewing oppression as well as learning to have diverse perspectives concerning pertinent issues in the society. This means that women studies include the expansion of knowledge in societal issues where oppression is assumed to be highly present such as sexism, racism as well as in class difference. Moreover, women studies adopt the tasks of various gender studies with the aim of achieving accurate information and knowledge concerning history (Pollitt, 2009). This history has been written, forwarded and angled by men. Therefore, it is given a more accurate dimension that helps learners not only to evolve but also to move in the right direction from the present moment. The paper will attempt to investigate what is regarded as part of women studies and what is not.
The rights and sole responsibility of man according women studies, is trying to illustrate the particular truths assumed incontrovertible. This is mainly because such truths are deeply rooted in the culture of prejudices that have clouded reason (Wollstonecraft, 2007). For this reason, such falsified truths have been adopted historically by different cultures as virtues. Consequently, the society has been led to believe in the wisest manner on events, assumptions and constitution that is sorely established and created on the nature of man. Such abstract reasoning that is forcibly established by the society appears like presumptions that require proof. Women studies tend to urge the prescriptions of facts and arguments that have been established by the society (Wollstonecraft, 2007). These facts or arguments justify their nature of insult to common sense, absurd sophisms thereby depriving women or men of their natural rights.
Women studies also try to focus on the existing rights of a democratic government ideally established to safeguard the very idea of the natural rights of each citizen therein (Anthony, 2013). The studies handle the idea of protected free speech in the process of creating and executing constitutional laws. The scenario essentially means that the province of governance is established to secure important or critical citizenry rights of every individual member (Anthony, 2013). Hence, the assertion here is that women studies revoke the old dogma and belief that governments are the sole providers of individual laws. This is because before their formation, each person had the individual responsibility of protecting and thereby defending his or her own property, life and liberty (Anthony, 2013).
It is not possible for individuals to barter away their personal or individual rights the moment they belong to a certain government. Simply put, they tend to pledge to defend and protect each other under the legislative tribunal or prescribed judicial constitution, that every member enjoys the right of his or her fundamental entitlement (Collin, 2006). Moreover, the constitution of several states, the declaration of independence, organic laws of territories as well as the United States constitution pledge and propose the protection of individuals’ God-given rights (Anthony, 2013). Additionally, women studies have sought to promote and defend the idea of feminism movement. Feminism movement is fundamentally established to end societal prejudice culture of sexism (Hooks, 2003). This theory or definition does not tend to indict men as the creators or enemies of women, but to indicate the culture of sexism as a number one enemy. In this regard, all actions and thinking cultures that seek to promote sexism culture are the heart of the problem of such a movement.
Most women and men do not fully understand the exact definition of sexism as they think it revolved around women who promote the idea of equality to men. This means that a huge mass of people perceive feminism movement set forth to promote anti-men agenda (Cooney, 2004). Therefore, such misunderstanding strongly indicates that such people should learn about feminism from patriarchal mass media. For this reason, the development of women studies seeks to educate and inform people about the dangers of sexism as well as feminism agenda. There are matters or issues that the society ignores by not speaking about them as they are mostly never seen (Snyder, 2008). For this reason, there is a need to educate and establish the ability of putting such things into practice in a manner that is genuine. This means that such issues should be approached from an equal point of view or perspective.
The individuals who have the capacity to critically review what they seek from a gender lens are needed by the society desperately as they are critical towards development of equality (Snyder, 2008). Societies move forward against cultures that promote conformity. In this case, it is important to note that conformity is a culture that is generally accepted by most society without question. This reason presents the need to engage and explore important societal issues and matters that generally affect the society through women studies. Women studies have played a leading role in highlighting several observable faults in the curriculum into perspective (McIntosh, 2005). For instance, men have always been unwilling to admit that the curriculum grants them more privileges as compared to women. Historically, such denials have naturally amounted into taboos that cloud the implications of men being more advantaged than women are (McIntosh, 2005). Hence, they have resulted to a culture that has continually protected the male privileges from being explored, acknowledged, recognized or ended.
Moreover, this is coupled with racist type of culture that is perpetuated by whites who do not recognize the fact that their white privilege is never encouraged to be explored just as males (McIntosh, 2005). Women movement is perhaps one of the greatest triumphed stories that was highlighted in the twentieth century and beyond (Kimmel, 2005). It reflected a success story of revolutionary transformation to the lives of many people from around the world. However, there is also the presence of other women who have never been represented or been part of such a success story. This is why it is possible to indicate that the women movement that seek to propagate equality agenda is stalled today (Kimmel, 2005). This is because many women still experience discriminative culture either in their private or public spheres. For instance, at the work place they are forced to endure harassment in most working environments that have established a culture that do not welcome their full participation and involvement (Kimmel, 2005). For this reason, they are forced to fight and protect their sense of dignity as they seek for ways that could put an end to domestic violence, rape victimization as well as human trafficking that targets women.
